One of the talents I am well-known to possess is my ability to find just about anything, be it in information or, as I love to employ it, that one very special perfect gift. My secret when it comes to unique goods for myself or others is in shunning the corporate. At the moment, I’m […]
As we live we generate products, our limited foresight can’t find any further use of most of them. These products have been christened as ‘Waste’ by our society. These include worthwhile products which could otherwise be used for many purposes like fuel, luminaries, fillers, rugs, bags, decoration items, sculptures, manure etc. We are presently on the brim to reach a state of ‘resource-less-ness’; a state where we would be devoid of all the niceties we are enjoying and thereby wasting.
As said earlier, it’s the mindset of our society where waste is perceived as an unusable, unwanted, surplus material to be disposed of. It is often seen as an eyesore ugly monstrosity all set to deteriorate our lives. The Oxford Dictionary defines ‘Waste’ as:
Verb – use or expend carelessly, extravagantly, or to no purpose
Noun – an act or instance of using or expending something carelessly, extravagantly, or…
It’s odd not having any idea what to say to an empty room. This experiment has played out in a few different ways. I have gone out in the world and talked to people and showed them what I make. I have done farmers markets. I have also tried to have my bags sell on consignment in a few places. I even have a website and facebook. Consignment wasn’t good. I can’t give half. I tried. It wasn’t worth it to me. It was a strange and necessary experience that had to happen though. Farmers markets were decent, but not always. I met some great people and got a few bags out there and proved my concept. I didn’t make a lot of money, but, I figured out what not to do. So here is where I rant and not have anything tangible to say. I guess thinking out loud isn’t so bad… How do get it out to you. To everybody. I make good stuff by hand. Aren’t we a world that used to value craftsmanship?
We live in a very strange world with very strange things that may or may not be a priority to some of us. I say us because we are all in this together. Meaning, we are all on the same planet. Not meaning we are all of the same mentality or the same mental state of awareness. That sadly isn’t happening. There is no great global awareness that is causing a magical paradigm shift in our consciousness and awareness. We aren’t all going to simultaneously wake up and figure out that our current way of doing things is not conducive to us living in harmony with out great earth mother… Don’t I sound like a hippy? I am not, I am. We all should be. Whatever. I am rambling. I want things to be different. I want everyone to wake up and stop being such wasteful fucks. Yep, I swear. It is what it is. I am not perfect. None of us are. L.A.N.D. Bags are pretty damned close to perfect. Seriously. 95% recycled and handmade. They are also tough as nails… Remember when I said I wasn’t a photographer, it’s still true… Which brings me to my point. I said something about a circus. How about a bag that looks like a circus tent? My bags come in all sorts of colors. And with that, here is a picture.
We have been gradually replacing our plastic (polypropylene) food storage containers with Pyrex ones. Our main concern was the tendency of plastics to leach toxins into food, especially when heated. For years we’ve been microwaving leftovers right in the plastic container. It really never occurred to me that this wasn’t safe, my confidence based chiefly […]
Machines like this make the millions of disposable bags that we humans use daily. Effortlessly converting sheets of plastic into a convenient vessel in which to carry your things. Better yet, you can just throw them away when you are done. How convenient. Especially since we live on a planet with infinite natural resources and a never ending infinite hole in which to dump the waste we are constantly creating. What an incredibly short sighted way of thinking.
When going somewhere and taking L.A.N.D. Bags with me, I usually carry them in a L.A.N.D. Bag… I can get between twenty five and thirty in a bag. That’s about two days of work for me, though I am getting better and faster at making them…. Now if only I could make them all day everyday and then get all of you nice people out there to buy one or two. Better yet, wouldn’t it be nice to create a few jobs and have people working for me, making L.A.N.D. Bags for conscientious souls like yourself? How do I know you are conscientious? Generally people who are somewhat environmentally conscious carry things like refillable water bottles and reusable bags. The point being that those items help avoid making more unnecessary waste. That’s what L.A.N.D. stands for. Landfill Avoidance the Natural Decision.
